On the evening of December 19, 2018, the U.S. Coast Guard took the lead in addressing a fire that erupted in the engine room of the asphalt carrier, Amber Bay, while it was departing the New York Harbor. The incident was reported shortly before 8:00 PM, with all 22 crew members onboard successfully utilizing the vessel's fire suppression system to extinguish the blaze. Following their swift action, the crew informed Coast Guard Sector New York at 8:05 PM that the Amber Bay was disabled and adrift approximately three miles south of Breezy Point. The Coast Guard Cutter Shrike, an 87-foot patrol vessel, along with crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook aboard a 47-foot motor lifeboat, were promptly dispatched to the scene. In coordination with the NYPD and the FDNY marine units, firefighters boarded the Amber Bay to confirm the fire was completely out. Additionally, a safety zone was established while plans were made for the vessel's salvage. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, nor was there any pollution noted. The tug Sarah D (IMO: 7400510) was also sent to the location to assist the disabled tanker, which was anchored at coordinates 40° 30.13' N, 073° 55.59' W.
