Reefer Vessel 'Amory' Grounds on Coral Reef Near Antsiranana Bay

Jun 11, 2025 11:39

On the morning of June 8, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Amory,' carrying a crew of 22, struck a coral reef while navigating to Antsiranana. The incident took place at coordinates 12° 11' N 049° 24' E, close to the entrance of Antsiranana Bay and the picturesque Emerald Sea. In response, maritime and environmental authorities have mobilized to devise effective strategies for the safe refloating of the stricken vessel. Fortunately, there have been no reports of marine pollution; the 'Amory' has remained stable, showing no signs of water ingress or physical damage. The Marine Oil Pollution Response Agency (OLEP), under the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Environment (MEDD), is enhancing its efforts to avert any potential oil spill threats in this delicate ecological region. The grounding was attributed to a technical mishap during the ship's maneuver as it approached its intended destination. Stranded Crew of MV Belita Finally Repatriated After Months of Hardship

Apr 15, 2013 21:34

After enduring months of dire conditions, the majority of the crew aboard the MV Belita have finally returned home. The Pakistani seafarers, who had been trapped on the vessel docked in Port Victoria, Seychelles, received their flight home over the weekend of April 13-14, 2013. During their isolation, the nine crew members faced severe shortages of basic necessities such as food and drinking water. With limited resources, they resorted to collecting rainwater for hydration and fishing for meals, living on a diet of rice and beans bought with their minimal savings. The crew had been stranded due to a lack of payment, having not received their salaries for a staggering six months. Their ordeals began on a different vessel under the same company, leading them to transfer to the MV Belita with promises of payment that never materialized. As the situation on board worsened, the crew endured discomfort so severe that they had to sleep on deck due to inadequate light and air supply. In response, port authorities installed pilotage lights to ensure the safety of the vessel. Throughout this challenging period, the Apostleship of the Sea played a vital role, providing continuous support and advocacy for the stranded crew, working closely with shipping agents, port authorities, and other welfare organizations. Thanks to their efforts, two crew members are still aboard the MV Belita, receiving necessary assistance until arrangements for their safe repatriation can be finalized.
