In a concerning incident at a New Jersey port, the United States Coast Guard has identified significant shortcomings in the security plan of a cargo vessel after a man was discovered in the captain's private quarters. On August 29, 2012, authorities reported that Eric Carrero, a 20-year-old from Yonkers, New York, managed to scale a barbed wire fence that separates a public parking area from a secure zone. Carrero was seen near the Andromeda Leader, a cargo ship actively unloading its freight, and gained unauthorized access through an entry point by the cargo hold. Despite lacking a federal Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)—a requisite for personnel in restricted areas—Carrero raised no alarms until he was unexpectedly found by the ship's captain. Following the discovery, the captain promptly notified the authorities. Carrero now faces charges for unlicensed entry and is undergoing psychiatric evaluation.
