Anchors Aweigh: The Challenges Faced by the Anemos

Aegean Sea Lines Bids Farewell to Ferry Anemos Amid Market Shifts
In a significant move, the Greek ferry operator Aegean Sea Lines has officially announced the departure of its vessel 'Anemos' from its fleet. Acquired in 2023, the ferry was initially integrated to enhance connectivity within the Western Cyclades, providing dependable ferry services to locals, professionals, and tourists alike. Throughout its operational tenure, the 'Anemos' successfully navigated the island routes year-round, even under challenging weather conditions, always prioritizing the safety of passengers, crew, and the vessel itself. However, given the evolving dynamics of the Western Cyclades routes and broader industry trends, Aegean Sea Lines found it unsustainable to maintain the ferry under the original terms and objectives. Now, the 'Anemos' has been transitioned to new ownership under the prominent market player Marios Iliopoulos, ensuring its continued service in Greek waters.
Anemos Ferry Delay Caused by Entangled Anchor
On May 4, 2025, the Port Authority of Milos received a notification around midday from the Captain of the ferry 'Anemos', regarding a delay in its departure from Adamas anchorage. The vessel's starboard anchor had become snagged on another submerged anchor, leading to the hold-up. After resolving the issue, the 'Anemos' successfully set sail for Kimolos, Sifnos, Serifos, and Piraeus at 1:40 p.m., a 40-minute delay from its original schedule of 1:00 p.m. On board were 29 passengers accompanied by a crew of 62.
Ferry Rosella Returns to Mariehamn to Assist Ill Passenger
On January 1, 2018, the MS Rosella, while navigating from Mariehamn to Kapellskär, made an unexpected detour back to its departure point. The decision to return to Mariehamn was made in light of an ill passenger onboard. After leaving Mariehamn at 12:45 p.m., the ferry turned around near Kobba Klintar, opting for a quicker solution than summoning a helicopter for evacuation. The vessel rejoined its original course shortly after, resulting in a delay of approximately 40 minutes.
Search for Woman Overboard from 'Rosella' Concludes Without Results
In a tragic incident on March 12, 2016, a woman fell overboard from the ferry 'Rosella' at approximately 11:30 PM while navigating the Sea of Åland, roughly 20 kilometers southwest of Mariehamn. A combined search and rescue operation was launched involving both Finnish and Swedish maritime services, but despite extensive efforts, the search was called off the following morning. The operation saw the deployment of several rescue vessels, including the lifeboats 'Rescue Stenhammar' from Räfsnäs and 'Rescue Ulabrand' from Åland, as well as the ferries 'Silja Symphony' and 'Mariella', along with the Coast Guard boat 'PV 262'. Initially, poor visibility due to fog grounded helicopters from both countries, delaying aerial searches. After five exhausting hours of searching in waters with temperatures just above freezing—a condition that limits survival time to under an hour—the Finnish rescue command made the difficult decision to terminate the search efforts. The incident has now been handed over to the authorities in Åland for further investigation.
