The cement carrier 'Aotearoa Chief' has encountered a mechanical issue, resulting in the vessel being docked at Marsden Point since July 28, 2023. This operational setback has prompted Fletcher Building to notify the New Zealand Stock Exchange about potential disruptions to its Golden Bay Cement operations, estimating losses could range between NZ$10 million and NZ$30 million. The ship is currently berthed at Northport, where the owners are conducting necessary inspections and repairs. As of July 29, the duration needed for repairs and the sourcing of replacement parts remains uncertain. To mitigate supply chain interruptions for North Island customers during this repair period, Golden Bay has implemented proactive measures. The company has communicated with its customers and activated contingency strategies, including utilizing existing coastal barges and enhancing road and rail transport options to ensure cement deliveries continue. Furthermore, Fletcher Building is exploring longer-term strategies that may include obtaining alternative cement supplies from both domestic and international sources, as well as securing a replacement vessel if necessary.
