In a significant legal ruling, Sea World Management & Trading, along with its officer Edmon Fajardo, has been found guilty of serious environmental infractions associated with the 'Sea Faith.' The incident occurred in early 2017 while the vessel was anchored off the Texas coast near Corpus Christi. The U.S. Justice Department reported that both the company and Captain Fajardo admitted to breaching the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships by failing to keep accurate records of oil and garbage discharges from the ship. Between March 10 and March 18, 2017, Fajardo directed his crew to unlawfully discharge oily waste from various locations on the vessel’s cargo deck. In addition to this, they disposed of a range of plastics, empty steel drums, oily rags, batteries, and empty paint cans directly into the ocean, contributing to marine pollution. As a result, Sea World Management was hit with a hefty fine of $2.25 million. Moreover, the company is now under a mandated three-year probationary period during which all its vessels operating in U.S. ports must develop and adhere to an environmental compliance plan. Captain Edmon Fajardo faced a six-month jail sentence, two years of supervised release, and an additional penalty of $2,000. This case serves as a critical reminder of the importance of adhering to environmental protection laws in the maritime industry.
