Investigation Launched Following Tragic Death of Cabin Boy in Colombia
The Columbian National Navy has announced an investigation into the tragic death of 18-year-old cabin boy Condia Bello from Sogamoso, Boyacá. The incident occurred as preparations were underway for the vessel's entry into the port of Barranquilla. Preliminary reports suggest that the accident took place towards the conclusion of a training cruise designed for cabin crew. Condia Bello's body was located almost a full day later, on the morning of September 1, in the Salamanca Island sector, within the Magdalena department's jurisdiction. It has been indicated that Bello was engaged in military naval training when he ascended to the top of one of the ship's masts, which was approximately 40 meters high. Reports reveal that he lost his footing, fell violently onto the deck, and subsequently plunged into the waters of the Magdalena River, rendering him unconscious. In light of this incident, the director of the Naval Petty Officer School has deployed a specialized team to meticulously examine the training procedures undertaken, ensuring transparency and accountability to Condia Bello's family during this difficult time.
Tragic Discovery: Body of Missing Cabin Boy Found in Magdalena River
The National Navy reported a somber development on September 1, as the body of 18-year-old cabin boy Julián Fernando Condia Bello was recovered from the Magdalena River. This tragic incident occurred when Condia fell overboard from the ARC 'Gloria' during preparatory maneuvers before the vessel's official reception at the port of Barranquilla, particularly near the Great Malecón. In a heartfelt message, the National Navy expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Cabin Boy Condia, praising his commitment to serving his country from the sea: “Today, we mourn the passing of a dedicated young member of our crew, whose honorable spirit and service-mindedness have made a lasting impact on the Naval Institution. We extend our prayers for his eternal repose and offer our deepest sympathies to his family, colleagues, and friends during this challenging time. His legacy will forever endure in the hearts of those who embraced the noble calling of defending Colombia.” According to Javier Hernando Rubio, director of the Naval Petty Officer School 'ARC' Barranquilla, Condia fell into the water as the 'Gloria' was being prepared for entry into Barranquilla. In response to the incident, the Navy launched an extensive search effort, utilizing three separate operations: one on water and river, another from the air, and a third on land. Over 800 personnel were mobilized along the banks of the Tajamar River, employing various naval resources. Ultimately, the body was located and recovered in the Salamanca Island area, situated on the Magdalena Department side.
