On February 28, 2017, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded in the North Sea as the standby vessel 'Esvagt Sigma' responded to a mayday distress call from the Norwegian sailing ship 'Blåmann'. The dual-masted vessel was struggling with severe water ingress and had lost propulsion approximately 15 miles southwest of Bergen. Wind conditions at the time were challenging, reaching forces of 6-7 Beaufort with gusts around 16 m/s. Upon receiving the alarming call, 'Esvagt Sigma' was promptly released from its duties at the 'Transocean Leader' and embarked on the rescue mission. Once on the scene, the crew of 'Esvagt Sigma' deployed a Fast Rescue Boat (FRB) to assess the situation onboard 'Blåmann'. Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that the vessel was not salvageable, as it was also out of fuel. Simultaneously, another vessel, 'Esvagt Alpha', was en route to facilitate a crew change. When 'Esvagt Sigma' determined the dire situation onboard 'Blåmann', the four crew members were safely transferred onto 'Esvagt Alpha'. Following the successful recovery, these brave individuals were brought ashore at Bergen, where they could receive care and support. The commendable efforts of both 'Esvagt Sigma' and 'Esvagt Alpha' did not go unnoticed; their crews received a well-deserved 'Bravo Zulu' in recognition of their lifesaving actions.
