Piracy Incident Involving VLCC Armada Ali in the Malacca Strait

Sep 26, 2013 04:04

In the early hours of September 23, 2013, at approximately 02:30 hrs, the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Armada Ali was engaged in Ship-to-Ship (STS) operations at Nipah anchorage, located off the Central Sumatra coast of the Malacca Strait, Indonesia. During this operation, a trio of robbers armed with knives and metal rods forcibly boarded the vessel, according to reports from ReCaap. The crew bravely confronted the intruders, resulting in the assailants retaliating by throwing bolts at them, and a knife was reportedly hurled towards one crew member. Fortunately, the robbers fled the scene without taking any valuables. Eyewitness accounts described the attackers as robust, middle-aged men exhibiting violent behavior. The suspects were seen wearing blue overalls but were notably barefoot. Investigators later discovered footprints near a section of the ship known as the three port cargo tank, suggesting that the assailants may have boarded from a vessel approaching the ship's port side forward of the manifold area.
