Ocean Tankers Enhances Security Protocols Following Recent Hijacking

May 05, 2015 12:28

In an urgent response to a recent hijacking incident, Singapore's Ocean Tankers announced plans to bolster its anti-piracy strategies. This decision follows a distressing event where, on May 2, 2023, the company's products tanker, the 6,500 dwt Ocean Energy, was attacked by eight armed pirates in the Straits of Malacca while it was en route to Myanmar. A representative from Ocean Tankers disclosed to IHS Maritime, "We are currently reviewing our security procedures to see how we can further improve these, and our main purpose is to ensure the total safety of all our crews no matter where they sail." Upon learning of the hijacking, the company promptly issued a security alert to its fleet, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to established safety protocols, including enhanced lookout measures and heightened awareness among the crew. The specific security measures currently in place were not detailed by the company. During the May 2 attack, the pirates compelled the ship's master to anchor at coordinates 02° 19.3.64' N, 101° 40.4' E, near Port Dickson, Malaysia, where they siphoned off 2,023 tonnes of gas oil. They also inflicted damage to the vessel's communication systems and stole cash, mobile phones, and an Iridium phone belonging to the crew. The hijackers departed at approximately 04:30 h local time on May 3. Fortunately, no crew members were harmed, and the Ocean Energy managed to report the incident to the company’s security officer shortly after at 05:53 h local time. The vessel was successfully returned to Singapore later that day. This incident marks the fifth reported case of fuel siphoning in the region for the year and occurred just eight months after another Ocean Tankers vessel, Ocean Osprey, faced a similar attack on September 22, 2022.

Brave Crew Endures High Seas Heist: 'Ocean Energy' Tanker Hijacked by Armed Pirates

May 04, 2015 09:24

In a daring assault, a group of eight armed pirates launched an attack on the tanker 'Ocean Energy' on May 2, 2015, just after 11:30 p.m. The incident occurred east of Port Klang, in the treacherous waters of the Malacca Strait, while the vessel was making its journey from Palembang to Yangon. The hijackers forced the tanker to alter its course to coordinates 02 19N 101 40E, approximately 40 nautical miles east of Port Klang, where they anchored the ship. Another vessel approached, allowing the pirates to transfer an impressive 2,000 tons of gas oil from the tanker to their own ship. Following their illicit operation, the pirates deserted the 'Ocean Energy' at 4:30 a.m. on May 3, leaving behind a trail of destruction; they damaged the navigational and radio equipment and made off with the crew's personal belongings and cash. At the time, 'Ocean Energy' was en route back to Singapore, marking a grim reminder of the piracy threats faced by maritime vessels in these waters.
