Cargo Vessel Zeta Star Grounds in Paraná River, Navigation Impacted
On the morning of October 4, 2016, the bulk carrier Zeta Star encountered a significant navigational challenge by running aground on the Paraná River, close to San Pedro. Having departed from San Lorenzo at 3:30 AM, the vessel was transporting a hefty cargo of 40,000 tons of corn and was on its way to Cape Town. The grounding occurred near Isla del Medio in Buenos Aires Province, where the Zeta Star became lodged in a sandy, muddy shallow. In response to the situation, a rescue vessel equipped with divers was sent to assess the hull for any potential damage. The incident blocked navigation in the main channel, permitting only vessels with a draft of up to seven meters to navigate the area. Fortunately, the dedicated efforts of tugs Ranquel and Yagan successfully refloated the Zeta Star on October 6, allowing the carrier to continue its journey towards Cape Town, with an estimated arrival date of October 19.
