On April 5, 2020, a 33-year-old Russian crew member aboard the tanker 'Asphalt Transporter' experienced severe fever and symptoms resembling those of COVID-19. The vessel, which was en route from Kaohsiung to Newcastle, Australia, made an emergency detour to Mati port in Southeast Luzon. After evaluating the crew member's condition, crew members facilitated his evacuation on April 7. He was swiftly transferred to a waiting aircraft destined for Manila for necessary medical attention. Following the medevac, the 'Asphalt Transporter' resumed its journey and is expected to reach Newcastle by April 14.
