In a significant ruling, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has taken action against two shipping firms and their respective captains for separate marine pollution incidents occurring within the Great Barrier Reef. On May 18, the Brisbane Magistrates Court found Tokyo-based Perses Maritima Ltd and the captain of its Japan-registered vehicle carrier, Asteria Leader, guilty of violating the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983. The case stemmed from a routine Port State Control inspection conducted by an AMSA marine surveyor at Fisherman Island, located in the Port of Brisbane. During the inspection, it was uncovered that the Asteria Leader had illegally discharged approximately 0.03 cubic meters of food waste into the Great Barrier Reef on October 8, 2014. As a consequence, Perses Maritima Ltd was slapped with a $5,000 fine, while the ship's master received a penalty of $500. This ruling highlights the ongoing commitment to preserving Australia's natural marine heritage and the legal repercussions of non-compliance with environmental regulations.
