Coast Guard Rescues Burn Victims from Astoria Bay near Cold Bay
On the night of January 8, 2014, a dramatic medevac operation unfolded when the U.S. Coast Guard airlifted two men suffering from severe burns off the vessel 'Astoria Bay,' located approximately 207 miles southwest of Cold Bay, Alaska. The incident came to attention on January 7 after the crew of the 'Astoria Bay' reported the injuries, which occurred while the men were working on the ship's boiler system. In response, watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau consulted a duty flight surgeon. The recommendation was to have 'Astoria Bay' monitor the men’s condition and alter course towards Dutch Harbor. However, as the crew monitored the situation, the patients’ conditions took a turn for the worse, prompting the deployment of a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak, which was forward stationed in Cold Bay. The helicopter team successfully executed the medevac despite challenging weather conditions, including 29 mph winds and 10-foot seas, along with rain showers. Following the rescue, the helicopter transported the men to the Cold Bay Clinic for immediate treatment before transferring them to the Seattle Burn Center via commercial medevac services. The 'Astoria Bay' was en route from Port Angeles, Washington, to Tianjin, China at the time of the incident. This operation highlights the critical role of the Coast Guard in ensuring the safety and well-being of seafarers in distress.
Dry Beam Cargo Ship Arrives at Ogden Point After Battling Rogue Wave
The cargo vessel Dry Beam has made a dramatic arrival at Ogden Point, Victoria, following an arduous journey that included encountering a rogue wave. For more details on this maritime incident and the ship's current status, visit the full article on the Times Colonist website.
Dry Beam Docked in Victoria After Rogue Wave Incident
The cargo ship 'Dry Beam' has safely reached port at Ogden Point in Victoria on February 5, 2012, following a harrowing encounter with massive waves approximately 480 kilometers off the northern coast of Vancouver Island. On February 2, 2012, the vessel faced towering waves estimated between 10 and 15 meters, which struck its port side and caused substantial damage, shifting its cargo of raw logs and bending the vertical support beams akin to matchsticks. Fortunately, all 23 crew members, comprised entirely of Filipino nationals, emerged unscathed from the ordeal. Once docked, IMS Marine Surveyors’ principal surveyor from Burnaby boarded the 'Dry Beam' to evaluate the extent of the damage and investigate the incident on behalf of the vessel's insurers. The treacherous currents and wave patterns in the region are notorious for their danger, leaving the crew with little recourse to prevent the incident. Extensive repairs will be necessary to restore the ship to a seaworthy condition, which includes removing the bent stanchions on the port side and transferring the logs to another vessel or barge.
