In the late hours of October 7, 2014, at 9:40 p.m., the NSRI Table Bay volunteer sea rescue team was summoned by the Transnet National Ports Authority to assist in a critical medivac operation involving the vessel 'BW Prince.' A 39-year-old Filipino crew member was suffering from severe third-degree burns on his left leg and required immediate medical attention. The rescue team promptly launched the 'Spirit of Vodacom,' accompanied by two paramedics from WC Government Health EMS, and navigated approximately 12 nautical miles offshore from the Mouille Point Lighthouse to meet the distressed ship. Upon reaching the scene, an EMS paramedic along with an NSRI crew member boarded the 'BW Prince' to assess the situation. The injured sailor was in serious but stable condition. He was safely transferred onto the rescue craft and then transported to shore, where an EMS ambulance awaited to take him to the hospital for further treatment. According to reports, the sailor sustained his injuries on October 4 when boiling water accidentally splashed onto his thigh. While the ship was traveling from Nigeria to Singapore, it diverted towards Cape Town, allowing for necessary medical attention from onboard medics and support from shore-based doctors.
