The Astro-Merope: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On September 30, 2024, a maritime mishap unfolded in Salamis when the bulk carrier 'Arch. Michael,' manned by 19 crew members, broke free from its moorings during repair work at a shipyard in Ampelakia. The vessel set adrift collided with a nearby tugboat, which in turn struck another tug, leading to a chain reaction that resulted in an allision with the wharf. Not stopping there, 'Arch. Michael' also made contact with a docked tanker before drifting into open waters. Responding promptly, Port Authority officials arrived at the scene where they coordinated the return of the bulk carrier with the assistance of several tugs including 'Alexander 5,' 'Christos XLI,' 'Christos III,' and 'Christos XXXVII.' Thankfully, the incident did not result in any injuries nor was there any evidence of marine pollution. The Central Port Authority of Piraeus has initiated a preliminary investigation into the occurrence. Currently, the affected vessels have been prohibited from sailing until necessary repairs are completed and seaworthiness certificates are validated by the relevant classification societies.
