Bulk Carrier 'Mario Theo' Aids in Dramatic Rescue of 105 Migrants at Sea

Dec 23, 2021 18:56

In a remarkable display of maritime solidarity, the bulk carrier 'Mario Theo' played a crucial role in the rescue of 105 migrants stranded at sea. The incident unfolded on December 16, 2021, when the sailboat 'Cinnamon' first spotted an overcrowded canoe-type vessel approximately 440 miles southwest of Gran Canaria, while navigating 160 miles from Nouadhibou at around 8 p.m. Initial reports indicated potential fatalities, prompting the urgent intervention of the Civil Guard's patrol boat 'Rio Segura', which was already conducting maritime patrols in Mauritanian waters. Upon reaching the location, the 'Rio Segura' was able to locate the distressed vessel. The 'Mario Theo', which had replaced the 'Cinnamon' as a standby ship en route to Avairo, was freed to continue its journey while the Civil Guard proceeded with the rescue operation under favorable sea conditions, opting against waiting for daylight. The migrants, all sub-Saharan men, received immediate assistance, including dry clothes, blankets, food, and water after enduring over two weeks at sea. Many displayed signs of severe exhaustion and required assistance with mobility, as they had suffered various injuries during their perilous journey to the Canary Islands. After a 36-hour ordeal, the rescued individuals were brought to safety at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on December 19, where one migrant had to be transported on a stretcher. Health care was promptly administered by the Red Cross and the Canary Islands Emergency Service, with two individuals being transferred to Hospital La Candelaria for dehydration and another referred to the University Hospital for additional medical attention. This rescue operation underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by migrants seeking safe passage to the Canary Islands.
