On May 23, 2011, at approximately 1200 LT, a significant maritime incident unfolded in the ship repair yard area of Ilyichevsk Port, Ukraine. The floating dock PD-154, which was housing the tanker Volgoneft-263, tragically sank. This unfortunate event occurred while the tanker, which contained 8 metric tons of fuel and 1.2 metric tons of lubricants, was docked. Initial alarms were raised when the crew of m/t Volgoneft-263 notified the floating dock personnel at around 0200 LT of a concerning bow trim. By 0400 LT, the vessel had shifted off its blocks, leading to the eventual sinking of the dock with the tanker inside around midday. The catastrophe triggered an EPIRB distress signal upon submergence. The cause of this sinking has been traced to a hull breach located in the crucial 142 frame area, an issue that had been earmarked for repairs. As a precaution, salvage and cleanup operations are already underway, and the sunken dock is currently boomed to contain any environmental impact from the spill.
