Devastating Storm Impacts Patagonia: Vessels Sink and Damage Reported
On November 17, 2025, a powerful storm with winds surpassing 150 kilometers per hour unleashed chaos across various cities in Patagonia. Notably, in Caleta Paula Port located in the city of Caleta Olivia, three artisanal fishing boats—the 'Yakisa', 'Barracuda', and 'Alborada'—succumbed to the storm, sinking in the turbulent waters. Further north, in Puerto Deseado, the extreme weather conditions caused significant damage to two moored vessels. The 'Atlántico I', a fishing vessel owned by Pesquera del Atlántico, part of the Profand Group, broke free from its moorings and collided repeatedly with the squid fishing boat 'Soho Maru No. 68', owned by Argenova S.A. This collision inflicted considerable damage on both vessels, resulting in a two-meter gash above the waterline on the 'Soho Maru No. 68', impacting its forward storage area and main deck, while the 'Atlántico I' sustained damage to its starboard stern rail at its quarter deck. Both vessels were at the port during the closed fishing season, secured between section 4B (second berth) and section 5A. In response to the ongoing hazardous conditions, officials are closely monitoring the situation to safeguard personnel on board, mooring crew, and company staff. Once the winds subside and conditions improve, steps will be taken to reposition the vessels to mitigate further damage and assure safety. Additionally, the artisanal boat 'Madre Teresa de Calcuta', which was docked in a shipyard in Rawson, began taking on water and listing due to the same intense winds, leading to it partially sinking. The Naval Prefecture has been notified and plans to pump out the accumulated water once the winds calm and the tide lowers, with the ultimate goal of stabilizing the vessel. Outbreak on Freezer Ship: 21 Crew Members Test Positive for COVID-19
On August 26, 2020, a significant health scare unfolded off the coast of Puerto Madryn as 21 crew members aboard the freezer vessel "Atlántico 1" tested positive for COVID-19. The alarming news was confirmed by Gustavo Sastre, the mayor of Puerto Madryn. The ship had a total of 38 crew members on board, all of whom underwent testing conducted by a biochemist from a private laboratory, who was brought to the vessel by the Argentine Naval Prefecture. Following the detection of the virus among the crew, protocols dictated that the remaining sailors be quarantined aboard the "Atlántico 1" due to their close contact with the infected individuals. The compliance of this quarantine will be closely monitored by the local Ministry of Health to ensure the safety and health of all those involved.
