Working Conditions Aboard the Auguste-Schulte

In a harrowing incident at Maydon Wharf 5 in Durban, a 19-year-old Tanzanian boy suffered severe hand injuries after becoming trapped in the hawse pipe of the bulk carrier "MI Harmony". The incident occurred just before midnight on April 20, 2017, as the teenager attempted to board the ship, which was scheduled to set sail for Maputo. His attempt to climb a rope to access the vessel resulted in his hand being crushed due to the movement of the ship. Emergency services, including the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and police rescue teams, were promptly dispatched to the scene. The rescue crews successfully extricated the teen and provided initial medical treatment for his crush injuries. He was subsequently transferred to Rescue Care Paramedics for additional care before being taken to King Edward VIII Hospital for further medical attention. Immigration officials, Portnet security, and members of the Maydon Wharf SAPS were also present on-site to manage the situation.
