Philippine Sailor Medically Evacuated Near Gozo

Jan 02, 2012 19:34

On the afternoon of December 29, 2011, a 25-year-old Filipino sailor experienced a medical emergency while aboard the 'Auriga Leader', approximately fifteen nautical miles west of Gozo. The sailor suffered from severe chest pains during the vessel's transit through the Malta Channel, as it journeyed from Jacksonville to Port Said. Around 11 a.m., the captain of the 'Auriga Leader' contacted the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) in Malta to request immediate medical assistance for the affected crew member. Responding swiftly, the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) deployed an Alouette III rescue helicopter. The crew successfully winched the sailor aboard the helicopter and transported him to Mater Dei Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Hybrid Ship Auriga Leader Sets New Standard for Eco-Friendly Car Transportation

Jun 14, 2011 15:37

This month marks a significant advancement in maritime transportation as Toyota begins to ship its hybrid vehicles using the eco-conscious Auriga Leader. Originally launched in 2008, this impressive vessel weighs 60,000 tons and has the capacity to transport up to 6,200 vehicles across the Pacific Ocean. To enhance its sustainability efforts, Auriga Leader has been retrofitted with a substantial array of solar panels, with the goal of decreasing its carbon footprint and fuel consumption during operations. In initial tests, the solar-generated energy accounted for 1% of the ship's total energy needs, which, while modest, translated to a reduction of 13 tons of fuel usage. However, the integration of solar energy has revealed challenges. NYK Line, the Japanese operator of the Auriga Leader, noted that solar power can be inconsistent, leading to fluctuations in energy supply based on changing weather conditions. 'Even minor variations in weather significantly affect power generation,' they explained. Although there were considerations to expand the solar capacity, engineers found that attempting to increase the number of photovoltaic cells only intensified the issue of variable weather impacts, creating potential instabilities in operations. NYK Line cautioned that enlarging the solar setup could complicate reliable power supply due to intermittent cloud cover and storms. Innovative Hybrid Power Supply System Set to Debut on Auriga Leader

May 27, 2011 08:21

In an exciting leap towards sustainable shipping, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), Kawasaki Heavy Industries, the Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI), and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) are gearing up to conduct shipboard tests in June on a revolutionary hybrid power supply system designed for marine vessels. This cutting-edge technology will be integrated into NYK Line's environmentally-conscious car carrier, the Auriga Leader, which has a gross tonnage of 60,213. Alongside the hybrid system, the Auriga Leader will also receive enhancements such as a ballast-water management system and modifications to utilize low-sulfur fuel, reinforcing the vessel's commitment to reducing its environmental impact. The power generation capabilities and durability of the solar panels onboard the Auriga Leader have been under evaluation since the ship's completion on December 19, 2008, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s shift towards greener practices.
