Aversa Towed Away for Repairs After Long Detention in Gent

Oct 07, 2014 20:59

On the afternoon of October 7, 2014, the cargo ship Aversa was towed from the port of Gent after being detained for over six months. The vessel, which had arrived on March 18 to unload a cargo of 2,600 tons of linseed, was taken in tow by a tug and headed for Turkey to undergo necessary repairs. The repatriation of the Ukrainian crew took place on August 19, after they received vital support in the form of food, water, and diesel from various organizations, including the seamen's house Stella Maris, OCMW Gent, shipping agents, and assistance from the International Transport Federation and the Ukrainian embassy. The Aversa was seized on March 19 by order of the Belgian Maritime Control, as it was deemed unseaworthy due to significant rust and a leak in the ballast tanks. Following preparations, the Aversa was made seaworthy enough to navigate as a 'dead ship' towards Tuzla for repairs. In related news, the Cambodian cargo vessel m/v Major (IMO: 8135100) remains held in Gent since January 15 due to structural concerns identified in the form of cracks within its bulkheads. Currently, five crew members are actively engaged in the repairs on board.
