Bulk Carrier Aids in Dramatic Rescue of Fishermen in Distress
On August 17, 2021, at 9:30 PM, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Costa Rica reached out to the United States Coast Guard's 11th District command center regarding a catastrophic fire aboard the fishing vessel 'Baula X'. With three crew members stranded, the fishermen had abandoned ship and were holding onto a buoy in the ocean, managing to maintain communication with onshore personnel via satellite phone. In response, the watchstanders at the 11th District turned to the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) system to coordinate assistance. The bulk carrier 'Avra GR', traveling from Guayaquil to Callao, was approximately 60 miles away from 'Baula X's' last known coordinates. The crew of 'Avra GR' immediately agreed to provide help and adjusted their course towards the emergency. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard cutter 'Northland', patrolling the Eastern Pacific, dispatched its MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew at 4 AM on August 18th to search the area for the fishermen. The helicopter successfully located the distress signal near the fishing vessel's last reported position, prompting 'Northland' to initiate rescue operations. Upon arrival, the cutter deployed a small boat crew, and by 5:40 AM, the three fishermen were safely aboard the 'Northland'. Subsequently, they were transferred to the 'Avra GR', which is poised to ensure their safe journey back to Costa Rica. Evangelos Mytilineos Expands Into Dry Bulk Market Amid Low Ship Prices
In a strategic move amid a favorable market, Greek industrial magnate Evangelos Mytilineos is capitalizing on reduced ship prices to make significant inroads into the dry bulk sector. His latest initiative, M-Maritime Corp, a ship-owning entity established under Mytilineos Holdings, has successfully acquired its second vessel within just one month. The company has acquired the 64,000 dwt ultramax, Caravos Melody, for a reported $18.5 million. This vessel is currently listed in Equasis as part of the fleet of Athens-based Iason Hellenic Shipping and is anticipated to be delivered soon from China's New Times shipyard. Just last month, M-Maritime was also associated with a $16.5 million deal for the Maratha Premier, a 34,900 dwt bulk carrier owned by Chowgule Steamship, though this transaction appears to remain unfinalized. As Mytilineos continues to build his fleet, the market watches closely for further developments in this emerging player’s dry bulk ambitions.
