BBC Chile Runs Aground in St. Lawrence River, Prompting Rescue Efforts
On June 4, 2014, the cargo vessel 'BBC Chile' encountered a challenging situation as it ran aground in the St. Lawrence River, just a few miles upstream from the entrance to the South Shore Canal. The ship, which had departed from Montreal at around 5 p.m. and was headed to Duluth, deviated from the navigable channel while entering Lake St. Louis, becoming lodged on the south side of the channel, north of Ile Saint Bernard. At the time of grounding, only a small section of the ship’s stern was protruding into the channel, allowing for limited one-way traffic. This incident caused several maritime vessels to experience delays lasting a few hours. In response to the emergency, Le Groupe Ocean deployed the tugs 'Ocean Ross Gaudreault' and 'Ocean Intrepide,' which ultimately succeeded in freeing the 'BBC Chile' during the night of June 5. Following the rescue, the vessel was safely moored in the Beauhamois Canal near Melocheville.
