On January 8, 2023, at 5 PM, a yacht named 'Baca' collided with the operations booth of the Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority (SLAC) during a scheduled bridge opening for incoming vessels. This unfortunate incident took place in St. Maarten, resulting in significant structural damage to the booth, as well as impairment to the communication wires linked to the operations consoles. Fortunately, the bridge operator escaped without injury. Personnel from the Port Security Group (PSG) promptly conducted a preliminary evaluation of the situation. Despite the incident, the Simpson Bay Bridge continued to facilitate maritime traffic normally for the rest of the day. However, plans have been made to temporarily close the bridge on January 12 at 4 AM to facilitate the removal of the damaged operations control booth. During this time, heavy machinery will be present in the area to assist with the repairs.
