On November 3, 2020, a heroic rescue operation unfolded in the Bay of Panama as the Chilean Navy tanker ‘Almirante Montt’ came to the aid of six crew members from a sailing yacht that had tragically capsized. The vessel had been alerted by the ‘Bakken Lady’, which was making its journey from La Pamilla to Balboa when it spotted the crew floating in the water. The stranded individuals, including three minors, had been adrift for more than two hours before help arrived. The quick thinking crew of the Almirante Montt promptly launched a RHIB to retrieve the castaways. Fortunately, while three crew members suffered minor burns, all received necessary medical treatment on board. Due to adverse weather conditions, the survivors could not be taken ashore until November 4, when they were safely delivered to a hospital for further care.
