On April 15, 2025, the cargo ship "Baku Wind" found itself detained in Mersin due to a troubling list of 16 deficiencies, with ten categorized as serious enough to warrant a detention. Key issues included: 1) Cracked covers for water and weathertight hatchways and tarpaulins, 2) Poorly maintained weathertight doors, 3) Corrosion in bulkheads, 4) Non-compliance with steering gear requirements, 5) Inoperative fire detection and alarm systems, 6) Deficiencies in firefighting equipment and appliances, 7) Other fire safety issues, 8) Inadequately maintained ballast water management systems, 9) Emergency lighting and related batteries and switches not properly maintained, and 10) Lifebuoys failing to meet standards for provision and positioning. Following the inspections, the "Baku Wind" was released on the same day and cleared for a single voyage to Tuzla for permanent repairs, which are expected to be completed by its arrival on April 25. This incident underscores the critical need for stringent adherence to safety and maintenance protocols in maritime operations.
