Attempted Boarding Thwarted at Muara Berau Anchorage
On May 6, 2018, a potentially dangerous situation was averted aboard the anchored vessel 'Baltic Scorpion' at the Muara Berau anchorage in Samarinda, with coordinates 00 13 48S, 117 33 48E. During routine rounds, an alert Able Seaman heard unusual noises emanating from the hawse pipe and spotted an individual attempting to displace the protective cover. Quickly notifying the Officer of the Watch, they activated the emergency alarms and sounded the ship's whistle, prompting the intruders to flee and abandon their boarding attempt. Following the incident, the crew assembled for a thorough search of the vessel, which revealed that nothing had been taken. Efforts to contact port control on VHF by the ship’s security officer, however, went unanswered.
