The maritime vessel "BBC Magellan" has received a significant sanction, as it is now prohibited from operating in U.S. waters for the next five years. This decision follows a court ruling on March 16, 2016, where the vessel's owners, Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG and Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG MS "Extum", pleaded guilty to serious environmental violations. These infractions included failing to keep an accurate oil record book, as mandated by the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, and attempting to mislead federal investigators. The legal action stemmed from an inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Port of Pensacola in March 2015. During this inspection, officials uncovered a rubber hose that had been improperly secured, which was later identified as being used to unlawfully discharge oily waste directly into the ocean. The investigation further revealed that between January and March 2015, the crew of the "BBC Magellan" had fitted this hose to remove oily waste from the ship’s holding tanks, bypassing proper disposal procedures. What’s more troubling, the crew were found to have made false entries in the vessel's oil record book, and upon questioning, the chief engineer instructed the crew to provide deceptive statements about the hose's use and the discharge of oily waste. As a result of these violations, the companies involved were hit with fines totaling $1.25 million, in addition to a $250,000 community service payment earmarked for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The funding will support essential projects designed to enhance coastal habitats across the Gulf of Mexico and to protect priority fish and wildlife populations. The pleas and penalties were announced by Assistant Attorney General John C. Cruden from the Environmental and Natural Resources Division of the Justice Department, alongside Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher P. Canova from the Northern District of Florida.
