Freighter Halted in Kiel Canal Due to Base Jumper Incident
On April 23, 2020, the freighter 'BBC Ganges' made an unexpected stop in the Kiel Canal during its westbound journey from Rostock to Campana. The vessel's interruption occurred after a base jumper leaped from the Levensau Bridge in Kiel-Suchsdorf. The police were notified shortly after 4 p.m. by a motorist who witnessed the individual jumping with a backpack. Additionally, another observer noted seeing a person in a wingsuit just moments before the freighter reached the bridge, prompting the ship to halt. Thankfully, the 'BBC Ganges' was able to continue its journey at a reduced speed once the situation was assessed. Meanwhile, Kiel Canal traffic control suspended navigation in the area to conduct a search for the jumper.
