A significant maritime incident occurred on December 21, 2017, at approximately 9 a.m. when the cargo vessel 'BBC Kibo' collided with a tugboat at the entrance of Porto Alegre’s port. The tugboat's attempts to start its engine were unsuccessful, leaving it unable to maneuver away from the path of the incoming cargo ship. As a result, the tug was struck on its starboard side and subsequently pushed across the harbor before the 'BBC Kibo' could bring itself to a halt. This incident has prompted an official investigation by the Navy. The 'BBC Kibo,' which set sail from Ilo, was transporting transformers and related equipment destined for ports in Santos and Zárate.
