As the season shifts to spring, the vibrant pulse of international trade has returned to Northwest Indiana. On Wednesday, the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor marked its annual 'Opening Day' by greeting the first ocean-going ship of the year, the 413-foot general cargo vessel BBC Mont Blanc. This ship arrived laden with crucial wind turbine components, destined for the deepwater port situated in Portage and Burns Harbor. Ian Hirt, the new Port Director who took the helm in March, expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, "The arrival of the first ocean ship of the new year is an exhilarating moment not just for our port, but for all associated businesses in the region that depend on the cargo these ships deliver." He further highlighted the significance of the spring opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, noting it as a beacon of hope, restoring essential links to global markets and fostering new opportunities for economic growth in Northwest Indiana.

BBC Chartering has successfully taken delivery of its latest addition to the fleet, the BBC Mont Blanc, marking a significant milestone for the company. This vessel joins the ranks of the BBC Everest, BBC Fuji, and BBC Kibo, forming a formidable fleet of what managing director Svend Andersen aptly describes as 'flexible workhorses.' With plans to operate a total of eight vessels in this series, each weighing 9,300 dwt, the fleet boasts an impressive combined lifting capacity of 700 tonnes. Manufactured at the XinGang shipyard in China, BBC Mont Blanc has commenced its inaugural journey from Ulsan, South Korea, bound for Kakinda, India, under a full charter agreement.
