In the early hours of February 5, 2017, at approximately 2:38 a.m., the vessel BBC Orion experienced a significant incident when it collided with the northern embankment of the Kiel Canal, specifically at the 24.5-kilometer mark. The ship was making its way from Waterford to Lindö, carrying a substantial cargo of 4,500 tons of steel. The collision stemmed from a blackout, which resulted in a malfunction of both the main engine and the rudder. To prevent the ship from drifting in an uncontrolled manner, the crew quickly deployed the emergency anchor. By 3:00 a.m., the vessel was back under control with all systems fully operational again.
