Spanish Frigate 'Canarias' Rescues Crewmembers of Attacked Ship 'Basilisk'

May 24, 2024 13:21

In a dramatic turn of events off the coast of Somalia, the cargo vessel 'Basilisk' was targeted by pirates while navigating in position 01°16 S 051°07 E, en route to Jebel Alil. The timely arrival of the Spanish frigate 'Canarias', part of the European Union naval operation EUNAVFOR Atalanta, played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the ship's crew. The 'Canarias' was returning from the Seychelles when it reached the scene on the evening of May 23. In a coordinated effort, soldiers swiftly boarded the 'Basilisk' using helicopter fast-rope techniques. Fortunately, by the time they arrived, the pirates had abandoned the vessel, leaving the crew unharmed. However, one crew member sustained injuries during the assault but was reported to be in stable condition, receiving urgent medical attention from the ship's onboard healthcare team.

EUNAVFOR Atalanta Responds to Piracy Incident Involving 'Basilisk' Off Somalia

May 24, 2024 10:37

On May 23, 2024, EUNAVFOR Atalanta sprang into action following a piracy incident involving the vessel 'Basilisk' off the coast of Somalia. The situation escalated when two small craft approached the ship amidst rising concerns for its crew's safety. The 'Basilisk' had last transmitted its AIS signal from a location just north of Madagascar two days prior to the incident. This ship had embarked from Porto Grande in Cape Verde on May 3, with a scheduled arrival in Khalifa set for May 29. Reports from EUNAVFOR suggest that the 'Basilisk' was navigating approximately 380 nautical miles east of Mogadishu, moving northward. In addition, the UK Maritime Trade Organization places the vessel around 420 nautical miles southeast of Merca, Somalia. Unconfirmed information indicated that the crew managed to retreat to the ship's citadel for safety. In response to the unfolding situation, Atalanta has deployed one of its warships to the area, marking the first naval response to this urgent maritime security threat.

Undetected Corrosion Leads to Crane Failure on 'Basilisk'

Dec 18, 2023 10:32

In a recent investigation report released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), it was revealed that undetected corrosion was the root cause of equipment failure onboard the 'Basilisk'. The incident occurred at 2:40 p.m. on July 23, 2022, during cargo discharge operations at the Greensport Terminal, located on the Houston Ship Channel in Houston, Texas, at coordinates 29°44′46.8″N, 95°11′06.6″W. The failure involved the hoisting wire rope of a shipboard crane, which gave way while offloading a component for a wind turbine, resulting in the component falling onto the vessel’s cargo hold tween deck No. 1. This unfortunate event caused significant damage to both the 'Basilisk' and the wind turbine component, with estimated losses ranging from three to five million US dollars. Upon inspection, significant external corrosion and wear were found on the hoisting wire rope, issues that had gone unnoticed prior to the incident. The grease applied to the rope concealed the visible signs of corrosion, which rendered annual visual inspections insufficient in identifying the underlying damage. Although the wire rope had been operational for nine years, it remained within the standard service timeline of ten years. However, a thorough post-accident analysis concluded that the wire rope was nearing the end of its capable service life and should have been replaced. In response to this incident, the operating company has revised its maintenance protocols, now mandating the replacement of crane wire ropes every five years. The NTSB report underscores the ongoing challenges maritime operators face in maintaining high-strength steel wire ropes in the salty and humid marine environment, emphasizing the importance of stringent inspection procedures.
