This is not the first encounter AMSA has had with this vessel's operator. Earlier in the year, a sister ship, the 'BBC Rainbow', was also detained on February 12 due to similar safety and pollution prevention lapses. The operator received a formal warning indicating that further serious deficiencies in any vessels within its fleet while in Australian waters could lead to escalated regulatory responses. While detained in Bunbury, the 'BBC Rio' managed to address its most critical safety issues and was subsequently allowed to unload its remaining cargo in Adelaide, South Australia, as scheduled, ensuring continuity in cargo operations.

On March 23, 2020, a critical medical evacuation unfolded in Matala Bay, where a 42-year-old crew member aboard the vessel 'BBC Rio' required urgent hospitalization. The ship was on its voyage from Kandla to Gibraltar when the crew decided to call for assistance. A patrol vessel promptly arrived to conduct the medevac, successfully transporting the ill crew member to the port of Kokkinou Pyrgos. Upon arrival, an ambulance was on standby to rush him to the Moeres Health Center for further treatment.
