On the morning of April 16, 2026, the cargo ship 'BBC Tokyo', sailing from Port Weller to Hamilton, experienced an allision with the Clarence Street Bridge in Port Colborne. The incident occurred as the vessel navigated around the moored bulk carriers 'Spruceglen' and 'Frontenac'. As the ship attempted to slow down amid strong tailwinds of approximately 30 kilometers per hour, its stern veered towards the port side, ultimately colliding with the bridge tower. The starboard side of the 'BBC Tokyo' sustained damage near the superstructure, and the structural integrity of the bridge was visibly affected, leading to its closure. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries associated with the accident. Following the incident, the canal was reopened the very next night. Repair work on the bridge commenced on April 17, after it was taken out of service. The 'BBC Tokyo' successfully berthed in Hamilton the same day.
