On the morning of February 15, 2019, the cargo vessel 'BBC Zarate' was involved in a significant maritime incident when it collided with the passenger ferry 'Men del Norte 2' at the confluence of the Amazon and Italia rivers near Iquitos. The ferry, which had just departed from Masusa Port en route to Pucallpa, failed to recognize the approaching cargo ship, resulting in a delayed maneuver that could not prevent the collision. The ferry became lodged on the bow of the 'BBC Zarate,' which was headed from Iquitos to Manaus and was anchored at coordinates 03° 40.53' S 073° 13.88' W. As the ferry began to sink slowly, quick action was taken by the crew of the cargo ship and the local port authorities, leading to the successful evacuation of all 200 passengers and crew members on board. Fortunately, no individuals were reported missing. The incident, however, resulted in the loss of two trucks, numerous motorcycle taxis, livestock, and poultry into the depths of the Amazon.
