On July 16, 2024, Houthi militants claimed responsibility for launching attacks on two oil tankers, the 'Bentley I' and the 'Chios Lion', in the Red Sea. This incident follows a warning from a British security agency regarding a series of assaults in this crucial maritime corridor. The attack on the 'Bentley I' reportedly involved an array of weaponry, including drone boats, unmanned aerial vehicles, and ballistic missiles. In a separate but related incident, the 'Chios Lion' faced aggression from uncrewed surface vessels. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a vessel navigating southwest of Hodeidah was approached by three small craft, with two of them manned by three individuals each. The third skiff was unmanned. During this encounter, the unmanned craft collided with the ship twice while the other two vessels opened fire. Fortunately, after a brief 15-minute engagement, the attackers retreated, and the vessel along with its crew emerged unharmed, continuing to its next destination. Further complicating the situation, the same ship reported that it came under fire from four missiles detonating in close proximity. Fortunately, these strikes did not result in injuries or damage. British maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed that a private armed security team was aboard the affected vessel during these attacks. In another incident occurring on the same day, an uncrewed surface vessel struck a merchant ship approximately 97 nautical miles northwest of Hodeidah. Though the attack caused minor damage and a light plume of smoke, reports indicated that the vessel and its crew were safe and resumed their journey to the next port of call.
