Engine Troubles Force Cargo Ship 'Birgit G' to Seek Assistance Off Westerhever

Feb 27, 2025 09:22

On the night of February 21, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Birgit G', while making its way from Husum to Rostock, encountered significant engine troubles and was forced to anchor just a few nautical miles off Westerhever. The crew's intention was to continue their journey to Büsum post-repairs; however, they prudently contacted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Bremen to request assistance. This precaution was taken to ensure that in the event of another engine failure, measures could be enacted to prevent the ship from running aground in the shallow waters adjacent to the narrow fairway. Promptly responding to the situation, the DGzRS lifeboat 'Theodor Storm', stationed in Büsum, was dispatched to the vessel's location. After the crew completed the necessary repairs, the escort operation commenced on February 22 at approximately 1:15 a.m. Just before dawn, around 3:30 a.m., the 'Birgit G' endured a second engine failure while it was 5.4 nautical miles off Büsum, near Tertiussand. Fortunately, the skilled captain managed to navigate the ship into the wind and successfully dropped anchor without further incident. Following this, the 'Theodor Storm' took aboard a pilot, along with technicians and inspectors from the 'Birgit G', ensuring a safe passage back to Büsum. The 'Birgit G' weighed anchor at 3:40 p.m. UTC and was subsequently escorted into the port by a commercial tug at approximately 6 p.m. After completing the repairs, the vessel set sail from Büsum again on February 25, reaching its final destination of Rostock on February 26.
