Incident Involving 'Bluestar Patmos' During Docking at Megisti Port
On February 2, 2026, the ferry 'Bluestar Patmos' encountered an unfortunate incident while attempting to dock at Megisti, also known as Kastellorizo Island. During its maneuver, the vessel ran aground, sustaining damage to the port side stern, particularly at and above the waterline. The incident occurred as the ferry was entering the port and making a right turn, influenced by strong winds that led it towards the Lighthouse, likely causing a collision with the propeller. The ferry was operating on a scheduled route from Rhodes to Megisti and was carrying 36 passengers, alongside nine private vehicles, three trucks, three motorcycles, and a crew of 81. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there was no indication of marine pollution as a result of the grounding. Due to the unfavorable weather conditions, 'Bluestar Patmos' could not complete its docking process and was subsequently ordered to leave the port. In response to the incident, the Central Port Authority of Rhodes has prohibited the vessel from sailing until a class maintenance certificate is presented by its classification society. A tug along with technical personnel from the shipping company has been dispatched to assist the ferry. In light of the situation, the ship-owning company has extended its hospitality by providing free accommodation and meals to the affected passengers. Following the incident, the ferry company notified passengers of the cancellation of the following scheduled crossings: on February 2 at 11:15 a.m. from Kastellorizo to various destinations and on February 3 at 3:00 p.m. from Piraeus back to Rhodes and its neighboring islands. An official investigation has been launched by the port authorities of Rhodes. In the meantime, Bluestar Ferries has decided to operate the upcoming crossings using the ferry 'Delos,' which has recently been reallocated following the dry docking of 'Bluestar 1' on the Cyclades route. The 'Bluestar Patmos' was eventually moved to the shipyard area in Elefsis on February 4, 2026.
