Ferry Incident Near Værøy: 'Bodø' Grounds but Escapes Without Damage
On April 29, 2026, at 04:00 a.m., the ferry 'Bodø' ran aground just outside Værøy in the picturesque Lofoten Islands while making its approach. The incident occurred amidst challenging weather conditions, featuring wind speeds of 14 meters per second and wave heights ranging from 1 to 2 meters. Thankfully, the ferry did not sustain any water ingress or pollution, and it managed to free itself using its own power. The vessel was carrying 23 passengers and 12 crew members at the time of the grounding, with no injuries reported. Immediate assistance was provided by the NSSR lifeboat, 'Det Norske Veritas,' dispatched from Ballstad alongside a Coast Guard ship. Following the grounding, the 'Bodø' experienced steering difficulties but eventually received the necessary help to dock. A diver was called to evaluate any potential underwater damage. Later that evening, the 'Bodø' set its course for Nesna with an estimated time of arrival on April 30, despite the need for potential repairs. This incident raises concerns for Torghatten, the ferry's operator, as they prepare for the busy summer season, with services set to commence on May 18, requiring three vessels for the route. On its website, Torghatten has informed customers about possible disruptions and service cancellations. For photos and further details on the incident, visit the reports from VG and NRK.
Technical Glitch Halts Bodø Ferry Operations
On July 25, 2019, at 2 p.m., the ferry "Bodø" experienced a technical malfunction while docked in Bodø, prompting operator Torghatten Nord AS to announce the cancellation of multiple sailings. Specifically, the ferry's 3 p.m. departure from Bodø, as well as sailings from Moskenes at 7:30 p.m. and from Værøy at 8:45 p.m., were affected. To accommodate passengers, the ferry "Værøy" stepped in to handle the night service from Moskenes, departing at 12:15 a.m., then making a stop at Værøy before arriving back in Bodø at approximately 4:45 a.m. After necessary repairs were completed, the "Bodø" resumed operations the following day, departing from Bodø at 7:10 a.m. and reaching Moskenes at 10:45 a.m.
Suspension of Bodø-Værøy-Røst-Moskenes Ferry Service Due to Technical Difficulties
On June 19, 2014, at 4:30 a.m., the ferry service connecting Bodø, Værøy, Røst, and Moskenes was abruptly halted when the vessel "Bodø" encountered technical issues and was compelled to return to Bodø. As a result, all scheduled departures, including the 8:15 a.m. trip from Moskenes, the 9:45 a.m. journey from Værøy, and the 11:30 a.m. sailing from Røst, were canceled. Passengers are advised to stay updated on service announcements as operations resume.
