On July 31, 2017, the vessel 'Nor Da Vinci' encountered a fire incident approximately five nautical miles east of the Tyne piers, shortly after departing from Blyth Harbour. The alarm was raised, prompting the UK Coastguard's Humber Operations Centre to dispatch Tynemouth RNLI's all-weather lifeboat at 1:15 p.m. to aid the distressed ship. Additionally, windfarm support vessel 'Iceni Spirit' responded to the Mayday call, swiftly navigating to the scene. Within eight minutes of launching, the volunteer lifeboat crew reached the 'Nor Da Vinci' and established communication with the crew on board, who confirmed that everyone was safe and not in immediate danger. Throughout the operation, the UK Coastguard maintained contact with the ship, ensuring the situation was closely monitored. Initial reports indicated that, although there had been a fire, the flames had subsided, with smoke emanating from smoldering pipe lagging. The Coastguard subsequently stood down the 'Iceni Spirit', expressing gratitude for their assistance, while the RNLI lifeboat stood by as a precaution. After an hour, the 'Nor Da Vinci' assured the Coastguard that the fire was completely extinguished and that they planned to anchor and conduct a thorough inspection. At 4:10 p.m., the ship successfully identified the fire's source and reported that all was safe onboard. While two out of the seven engines were rendered inoperable due to the fire, the ship remained maneuverable and anchored under its own power, east of Tynemouth. As the lifeboat was released from duty, the crew of the 'Nor Da Vinci' proceeded with necessary repairs.
