M/T Borgoy: The Pioneer LNG Tugboat Embarks on Its First Voyage to Stavanger

Feb 19, 2014 23:54

Setting a groundbreaking precedent in the maritime industry, the M/T Borgoy, the world's inaugural LNG-driven tugboat, has successfully docked at the port of Zeebrugge for a pivotal bunkering operation. This innovative vessel, powered by liquid natural gas (LNG), marks a significant step towards meeting stringent emission regulations that are reshaping the shipping landscape. The M/T Borgoy is designed to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 30 percent and slash NOx and particulate matter by up to 90 percent in comparison to traditional tugboats. Commissioned by Norway’s BUBE (Buksér og Berging AS), the M/T Borgoy is the first of two identical tugs that have been constructed. After departing from the Sanmar shipyard in Turkey, the tug is now on its journey to Karsto, Norway, where it will commence its long-term operational contract with Statoil. To refuel for this landmark maiden voyage, the tugboat is currently underway for a LNG fueling stop at the port of Zeebrugge, where the 'Truck to Ship' method was employed for the bunkering process.
