In a groundbreaking event for the maritime industry, Guangzhou Shipyard International Co. Ltd. has launched the first liquid natural gas (LNG) icebreaker on Tuesday, specifically engineered for navigation through the treacherous icy waters of the northern polar region. This remarkable vessel, named Boris Sokolov, has been commissioned by Greek company Dynacom, which confirms the strengthening collaboration in the energy sector. In a strategic move, Yamal LNG has entered into a long-term charter agreement with Dynagas, the vessel's owner, making it a vital component for the world’s largest LNG project situated at the Yamal LNG plant in northwest Siberia. Designed to withstand extreme Arctic temperatures that can plummet below -50 degrees Celsius, the Boris Sokolov boasts the highest ice-breaking capability, certified by Russia's Maritime Register of Shipping. This exceptional design ensures that the tanker can effectively operate year-round, facilitating continuous delivery to and from the project site.
