On December 13, 2024, a series of heroic rescue operations off the coast of Greece resulted in the saving of approximately 200 migrants, though the situation remains dire with five confirmed fatalities and around 40 individuals still unaccounted for. Multiple search and rescue (SAR) missions were launched in response to several distress signals in the treacherous waters near Gavdos island. The container vessel 'Mito' (IMO: 9319571) played a crucial role, rescuing 39 individuals from a sinking boat approximately 12 nautical miles southwest of Gavdos during notoriously rough weather. Tragically, five deceased individuals were recovered from the sea as survivors indicated that around 40 people might still be missing. Meanwhile, the LPG tanker 'British Achiever' undertook a significant operation, rescuing 89 migrants around 28 nautical miles south of Gavdos. Additionally, the cargo m/v 'Seabee' (IMO: 9698941) assisted in saving 47 migrants approximately 40 nautical miles from Gavdos. The cement carrier 'Blue Ciment 4' (IMO: 9577288) also contributed, rescuing 28 individuals from a beleaguered boat just six nautical miles off Cape Tainaron. The Greek Coast Guard has been tirelessly conducting extensive overnight searches in the area, with support from Navy helicopters and commercial vessels, striving to locate the missing migrants and provide aid to those in need.
