Heroic Medevac Operation Off the Coast of Mangaluru
In a remarkable display of maritime teamwork, the crew of the LNG carrier 'Broog' successfully executed a medevac operation for a seafarer in distress. On April 11, 2019, while navigating from Ras Laffan, Qatar, towards Futussu, the vessel's captain Wilfreo A Sales reported a critical situation to the Coast Guard headquarters at Panambur. Positioned approximately 300 nautical miles off the coast of Mangaluru, the ship's able seaman, Regoita Arwen A, was experiencing severe abdominal pain due to an inflamed appendix. Responding swiftly to the captain's distress call, the Coast Guard, along with the deputy conservator of New Mangalore Port, the traffic manager, the harbour master, and the customs department, promptly coordinated the evacuation. Regoita was successfully transported to the AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, where he underwent surgery and is currently on the road to recovery. This incident highlights the critical importance of rapid response in maritime emergencies.
