LNG tanker rates have surged to unprecedented levels, reaching $150,000 per day this month, driven by the increasing import demands from Asia and South America, as reported by Reuters. According to market analysts, the number of available vessels has diminished significantly due to this heightened demand. In December 2011, short-term freight rates averaged $125,000 per day, a notable increase from $68,000 per day in December 2010. Recent reports indicate that these short-term rates have further escalated, with current vessel rates now falling between $150,000 and $155,000 per day. In response to this booming market, Norwegian shipping company Stena Bulk has extended the charter of its two LNG carriers, the Stena Clear Sky and Stena Crystal Sky, both built in 2011, for an additional four years at a daily rate of $140,000, according to Drewry's analysis.
