Collision Incident Involving Two Tankers Off Colon

Dec 21, 2020 11:19

On December 19, 2020, an unfortunate incident occurred in the Panama Canal's Colon anchorage when the LPG tanker 'Sunny Bright' experienced mechanical issues during its mooring procedure. Having just arrived from Houston, the vessel began to drift and subsequently collided with the anchored 'BW Gemini', which had reached Colon a day earlier on December 18, also from Houston. The impact resulted in the stern of 'Sunny Bright' making contact with the starboard foreship of the 'BW Gemini'. Following the collision, 'BW Gemini' relocated to the inner anchorage of Colon, securing its position at coordinates 09° 26.77' W 079° 57.18'. Meanwhile, the 'Sunny Bright' settled at anchor at coordinates 09° 22.65' N 079° 55.54' W. As of December 21, both vessels remained stationary at their respective positions.

BW LPG Limited has officially taken delivery of its latest Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC), BW Gemini, marking a significant milestone in its ambitious newbuilding program comprising eight VLGCs. Commenting on the vessel’s arrival, BW LPG’s Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Hoare, expressed enthusiasm about the delivery coinciding with favorable market conditions. The BW Gemini, with a capacity of 84,000 cubic meters, is specifically designed to optimize loading efficiencies from U.S. terminals. This new addition reinforces BW LPG’s commitment to expanding its operational capabilities and enhancing service to its robust customer network.
