In a significant move for its energy landscape, Egypt has officially taken delivery of its second floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at the Port of Sokhna. The FSRU, named 'BW Singapore', has been commissioned by the state gas board EGAS, with operations anticipated to commence in the third week of October, as confirmed by CEO Khaled Abdel Badie in a report to Reuters. The 'BW Singapore', supplied by Singapore's Norwegian enterprise BW Gas, boasts an impressive regasification capacity ranging from 600 to 700 million cubic feet per day. This advanced facility will empower Egypt to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) and transform it into natural gas, which is crucial for replenishing the nation's energy-intensive power grid. This arrival follows Egypt's reception of its first FSRU from Norway's Hoegh LNG back in April, marking a pivotal step in the nation's strategy to restore LNG imports. Historically, Egypt was an energy exporter; however, diminishing oil and gas outputs coupled with rising domestic consumption have necessitated a shift towards becoming a net energy importer. The agreement with BW Gas, valued at approximately $60 million annually, was initially disclosed by former oil minister Sherif Ismail in August, who has since transitioned to the role of prime minister. The BW Gas unit will be permanently positioned at the strategic Gulf of Suez locality of Ain al-Sokhna, alongside the existing Hoegh terminal, thereby enhancing Egypt's capability to address its energy demands effectively.
