In a significant milestone for maritime engineering, Gibdock shipyard in Gibraltar successfully wrapped up an extensive upgrade project on the seismic survey vessel Viking Vanquish in mid-October 2013. This vessel, owned by Eidesvik and operated by CGG, underwent a meticulous overhaul that primarily focused on the tailshaft withdrawal and a comprehensive refurbishment of the shaft, couplings, liners, and associated equipment. The overhaul presented a unique challenge, as the Gibdock team had to carefully cut away a segment of the stern tube to access the shaft for removal and repair. Beyond the tailshaft work, Gibdock conducted thorough testing of the vessel’s winches and executed vital pipe work. The project also included the renewal of propeller blades and seals, as well as extensive blasting and painting of the ship’s external surfaces. A highlight of the upgrade process was the use of an innovative cleaning product from Ultraclean—a specialized blend of gel and chemicals designed to effectively remove corrosion from the Viking Vanquish’s gun-deck and cranes. This advanced cleaning solution was then rinsed away with water, ensuring that all surfaces were meticulously prepared for final coating.
